New Comments Policy

Starting this very morning, anyone who wants to comment on the ol' blog will need to sign up for a user account. It takes very little time, and I hope all my regular comment-people will do so. But your old pal Smash needs a small break from the amount of anonymous meanness going on in the comments section.

When I started this blog, I promised myself that I would never delete comments, a la some big blogs, just because they weren't complimentary. And then I started getting comments, and, well, let's just say I understand the impulse.

I think it's very strange that some people feel the compulsion to write in and tell any blogger that they hate them. If you hate them, stop reading them. All we care about are our stats anyway. You're not making your case very well if you're giving us clicks.

So anyway, the new policy: You can still say horrible things, if you like. You'll just have to sign in and give an email in order to do so. This way, if you say anything about me I don't like, I can have my gang of scythe-wielding monkeys track you down and give you a terrible haircut. After which, you will be placed in the stocks in the public square for all to see.

  1. Dammit. Foiled again. The Phantom Commenter will not be defeated! I shall return, with even more inappropriate comments about your love life than ever before! Nooooo!

  2. Someone called me a moron for not knowing the difference between a chickenhead and a hood rat.

I mean, this is your obsession? Go pick up Dickens and shut the fuck up already.

  3. Wow. JennieSmash has now officially pushed me into an identity crises. I've been faithfully reading and posting on your blog for the past year, in my comfortable anonymity. Now I need a blogger name! I need a blog title! What a conundrum to create an identity in 1 or 2 words! And now I will worry that I am taking up all this internet space with a page I will feel obligated to post thoughts to, even though I probably never will. On the upside, I won't wake up in the middle of the night anymore worrying that people out there are mixing up the anonymous posters and hating me for something someone else said. Seriously, I have done this... We all have our issues.

  4. "Bunch of savages in this town."

So much for random links. Though I, too, used to worry that someone would use my posting habits to make nasty comments, so I guess it's a fair trade.

  6. Aw, I'm sorry you're going through this. I've enjoyed your blog, for the record, so no hatin' here! A friend of mine with a blog currently has a stalker -- talk about mean/creepy. I don't get the impulse for comment meanness either, and yet I had to switch to moderating my comments b/c some of them were so sick/awful. Really sort of ruins the spirit of the thing. Anyway -- good luck, and don't let the haters get you down.

  7. Smash's "New Comments Policy" will surely take some of the edgeyness out of this blog. I never thought that the gentrification of the LES would reach JennySmash.com, but here it is. No more 3am knifefights with Pa Hubley about transit workers or drunks posting comments from the 2nd story window! I'll miss the gritty 'ol days myself. At least Jen hasn't put up banner ads for Starbucks or The Gap so there is a glimmer of hope...
